We’re on defense.
The other team is making its way toward the goal.
Fourth down on the 10 yard line, they decide to go for it.
The sidelines are packed, friends and families grouped together in one tight spot down by the goal. Cheering, biting their nails, jumping up and down.
The quarterback hands off the ball to the runningback.
He dodges a couple of our defense, makes a leap –
And fumbles.
One of our defenders jumps on that ball – WE GOT IT
Our sideline ROARS, the defender does a victory dance.
The next play ensues and the time runs out.
We won! Exhausted from the game but thrilled at their victory, the players run off the field with their arms pumped high. A winner’s dinner at Famous Dave’s BBQ soon follows.
6th grade football is just as stressful and exciting as college football.
I have seen crazier parents at their 11 year old’s football game than the fans at college and pro games. They argue with the coaches, scream obscenities at the refs, and trash talk the other team’s sideline.
For this reason and multiple others, I love football.
(ps… the fumble recoverer/victory dance doer/winner’s dinner suggestor was OF COURSE my favorite 6th grader and birfday twin, matthew neil hubble, #4)
